(June 13, 2022) We’re excited to announce the signing of a global complete catalog publishing deal with writer/artist Jerry Barnes and his late sister, Katreese Barnes.
Jerry and Katreese began their careers in the early 80’s as the R&B duo Juicy, releasing several albums with Arista Records and landing 6 R&B chart singles including “Sugar Free”, “Bad Boy”, “Nobody But You” and “It Takes Two” as well as “Beat Street Strut”, their contribution to Beat Street, one of the first feature films to highlight hip hop culture. At the same time, they contributed to R&B and Pop singles by Deodato, Gwen Guthrie and AZ. Through the 90’s and 00’s, the duo collaborated – as songwriters and tour and studio musicians – with a who’s who of Pop, Soul and Jazz artists including Chaka Khan, Angie Stone, Blackstreet, Carly Simon, Stevie Wonder, Phyllis Hyman and Ashanti, among others.
In the early 00’s, Katreese became a songwriter, producer and, eventually, Music Director for NBC’s Saturday Night Live, spending 15 years writing cues, themes and original songs with various cast members and musical guests. She won Emmy Awards for her collaborations on The Lonely Island’s “Dick In A Box” in 2007 and Justin Timberlake’s infamous monologue song “I’m Not Gonna Sing Tonight” in 2011. Katreese also wrote the recurring themes for such skits as What’s Up With That and Magruber. She sadly passed away in 2016 after a long battle with cancer.
Jerry has continued to collaborate in recent years with a diverse mix of writers and artists, playing and recording with Santana, Angelique Kidjo and Empire Of The Sun and producing Roberta Flack and Nile Rodgers’ Chic, for whom he is the bass player and music director.
Said Jerry Barnes: “I’m a sports fan. When a team works together and everyone’s doing their part, you win. I’m looking forward to winning with Mojo. Let’s go!!!”
Said Mojo Co-Founder and CEO Mark Fried: “I’ve known Jerry and Katreese since my early days at BMI and watched them become two of the most sought after songwriters, musicians, arrangers and producers on the planet. Their prodigious talent has only been matched by their boundless energy and positivity. We’re amped to be helping Jerry expand his circles and find new creative outlets and honored to shine a light on Katreese’s three-plus decades of gems.”
